Sun Moon Lake Marathon Taiwan Joins AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Championship qualifying series
The organizers of Sun Moon Lake Marathon have inked an agreement for Sun Moon Lake Marathon to join the 2021 Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Championships as a qualifying event.
The AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Rankings was introduced in 2018, and the first year of qualifying ran from September 2018 at the BMW Berlin-Marathon to the 2019 BMW Berlin Marathon. The inaugural one-year cycle offered participants aged 40 and above more than 50 marathons across the world to earn ranking points in up to two qualifying events and the second year will include more than 135 marathons across six continents. The top 1,000 runners will be invited to the AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Championships, the 2020 edition being held within the Virgin Money London Marathon. This will include the top male and female runners from Taiwan. For Series XII, there are no qualifying marathons being held in Taiwan but for Series XIII, runners will be able to earn ranking points at the Sun Moon Lake Marathon.
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon will mark the start and finish of the second qualification period, from October 13, 2019 through October 11, 2020. The 2019 Sun Moon Lake Marathon is excited to join AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Championships, where full marathon runners can earn points and be listed in the AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Rankings. The venue for the 2021 AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Championships will be announced later this year by AbbottWMM.
The 2019 Sun Moon Lake Marathon will take place on October 27, 2019 and has attracted more than 5,000 participants, including 585 international athletes from 33 different countries and regions. The route has been named by CNN Travel as one of the best cycling routes in the world. The marathon will be held concurrently with the annual Firework and Music Festival at Sun Moon Lake.
Chen Cheng-Sheng, Deputy Commissioner of Nantou County said at the planning meeting of Sun Moon Lake Marathon: “The Sun Moon Lake Marathon is now the 7th edition in 2019. It becomes a member of AIMS as well as a named marathon of AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group Qualifier this year. The Sun Moon Lake Marathon has not only been recognized in Taiwan, but also attract attention from the world, which is highly beneficial to the promotion of this County’s international tourism.”

The Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM) is a series of six of the most renowned marathons in the world: Tokyo Marathon, Virgin Money London Marathon, BMW Berlin-Marathon, Bank of America Chicago Marathon and TCS New York City Marathon, and the Boston Marathon. Completing all these six major races requires more than luck in entry drawing but also physical capabilities. It’s not an easy task to participate any one of these major marathons.
