Green Destinations Silver Award for Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area

Introduce

Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area, through the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration Tourism Administration, MOTC, has successfully applied for recognition of its sustainability policy and achievements through the Green Destinations Award program. This program certifies and promotes sustainable tourist destinations at an international level in accordance with environmental, socio-economic, and cultural criteria.

After a period of extensive preparation and reporting of substantive dossiers covering more than 100 sustainability criteria and indicators, and an independent on-site audit, the Silver Level Green Destinations Award was awarded to Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area, indicating excellence in all fields of sustainable destination management such as nature and heritage conservation, waste management, energy and climate. The Award is also a recognition of the destination’s efforts to ensure the future appeal of its tourism. Not only are visible, tangible aspects measured, such as natural heritage, but also policy and management plans that incorporate sustainable development principles.

Among its commendable practices, the destination has made significant efforts to promote low-carbon tourism, including organising pilot carbon-neutral itineraries and encouraging the use of public transportation. It has actively subsidised the replacement of diesel-powered boats with electric boats, promoting cleaner mobility on the lake. Furthermore, its campaign to promote reusable cups has significantly contributed to reducing single-use waste, reflecting its dedication to eco-conscious daily practices.

As one of the improvements for the future, it was recommended to strengthen the internal environmental management practices across the entire destination, expand the scope of accessibility for persons with different impairments, promote public sustainability reporting, and engage more tourism enterprises in adopting sustainability measures including energy saving, carbon footprint reduction, and equal employment opportunities.

Since 2022, Sun Moon Lake has been included in the Top 100 Destinations Sustainability Stories competition. This Green Destinations Silver Award represents a significant step towards achieving fully evidence-based and independently verified certification of sustainability performance, in accordance with international standards established by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).

The Award will be officially presented to Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area during Global Green Destinations Days 2025, in the Netherlands, on 03 July 2025.
