WINNING STORIES | GREEN DESTINATIONS TOP 100 STORY AWARDS AT ITB BERLIN 2025

Introduce

Sun Moon Lake Natinoal Scenic Area Awarded in the Green Destinations Top 100 Story Awards at ITB Berlin 2025

Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area is honoured to announce its recent achievement at the prestigious Green Destinations Top 100 Story Awards, held with the ITB Berlin 2025 on 4 March 2025, the world's leading tourism trade fair. In a significant recognition of our efforts towards more sustainable tourism, Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area has been awarded the 3rd place in the category "Business & Marketing". This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our community, stakeholders, and partners such as Fleur de Chine Hotel, OneLife, and the 29 businesses that offer a reusable cup service.

Since joining GD, we have redefined the vision and goals for Sun Moon Lake’s development, exploring ways to collaborate with local businesses, residents, public departments, and other stakeholders to expand the impact of green tourism. Through the interactive large-scale SDGs board game, we have heightened awareness among local businesses, inspiring them to launch the ‘Pure Pool’ itinerary—an initiative that blends local culture with waste-picking activities—and the ‘One Day Trash-Free Travel Challenge.’ These efforts empower local businesses and residents to reduce waste and champion sustainable tourism actively.

While initial engagement was cautious, we actively promoted the Sun Moon Lake Good Neighbour Project, providing free recycled cups and access to free drinking water. Through board games, we facilitated deeper conversations with stakeholders, gradually encouraging them to identify key challenges and propose future actions.
Over time, this approach led to a remarkable shift—stakeholders moved beyond passive participation to actively advocating for sustainability.

Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area remains dedicated to furthering its sustainable development activities, building upon the approaches that led to this distinguished honour. We thank Green Destinations, ITB Berlin, and all the sponsors for this recognition. We invite global tourism partners to join us in creating a greener, more responsible future for Sun Moon Lake.
