This travel itinerary follows the ARO principle, an approach adopted by the Paris Olympics to calculate product carbon footprints. By applying this methodology, each traveler’s carbon emissions are successfully reduced to 45 kilograms, 46 kilograms less than the typical 91 kilograms produced by standard itineraries, representing a 50% reduction.

Sun Moon Lake Bikeway – Xiangshan Section

The 400 meter long Shuishang Bikeway that connects Shuishe to Xiangshan Visitor Center evokes the feeling of riding on water, as you encounter attractions like Shuishe Dam, Sun Moon Lake water outlet, Yongjie Tongxin Bridge, and Xiangshan Viewing Platform.

Sun Moon Lake Bikeway – Shuishe Section

Start from Shuishe Wharf and ride pass Jiulongkou along the way. Due to the smooth terrain, a water platform is built here to serve as a small outdoor performance space. Stop here to enjoy the beautiful water scenery and see Ci En Pagoda, Mt. Qinglong and Mt. Erlong from afar.

This section of the bikeway connects to Songbolun and Dajhuhu and the slope is quite smooth. Visitors can stop by Wenwu Temple along the way and see the beautiful scenery here, or enjoy the beautiful sunset at Dajhuhu.

The Ita Thao section of the bikeway connects to Shuiwatou Hiking Trail and Sun Moon Lake Ropeway Station. Visitors can bike to Ita Thao Lakeside Trail to enjoy the beautiful lakeside and mountain views in Sun Moon Lake.

Sun Moon Lake Bikeway – Yuetan Section

Start from Xiangshan Visitor Center and travel south along the Yuetan south shore, pass Toushe Dam and Yueya Bay to the entrance of Lake Tunnel No. 1. Enjoy the ecology and numerous types of trees along the way, especially views overlooking Toushe Basin, open fields and houses that line up like a chessboard from afar.

Biking around Sun Moon Lake is one of the must-try activities when you visit Sun Moon Lake. There are enchanting sceneries along the way, and delicious Ita Thao cuisine to try. Sun Moon Lake Bikeway – Tannan Section

This section of the bikeway is extremely difficult because most of the section is shared with other cars. Please be sure to ride along the side of the road and follow traffic regulations. There are more businesses in the areas surrounding the lake and villages in Tannan. We recommend that you bring enough supplies and charge your cell phone before departure.

Toushe Bike Path

The rustic village of Toushe, Nantou County has vast green fields with egrets flying around. Meandering through this tranquil and elegant place on a bike is refreshing and relaxing. Due to thousands of years of growth of water weeds and silting of muds, Toushe is characterized by a special kinds of soil called “peat.” It is thus known as “Field of Mambo,” meaning that when people walk in the fields of Toushe, the soft soil makes them wobble, as if they were dancing. May is the month when orange day-lily blooms in Toushe. In June and July, visitors can find yellow loofah flowers all over mountain valleys. Wanna take a crowd-free trip? Grab your bike and ride along the bikeways here in Toushe. Enjoy its culture and have fun!

Taomi Police Bureau → Ershan, Jiufen

The elevation here is approximately 400-900 meters. Start from Taomi Police Bureau, and ride pass Zhonggua Road to Nangang Road, then take Longnan Road to Ershan, Jiufen. Ride around Ershan, Jiufen once to get back to Longnan Road. This route is extremely difficult, with rugged terrain and no stores or other businesses close by, so be sure to have all your supplies ready and have your phone fully charged before departure.

Taomi Police Bureau → Jinlong Mountain

The elevation here is approximately 400-800 meters. Start from Taomi Police Bureau and go pass the Paper Dome and Pasture Yen Family. The whole distance is enhanced by the sounds of buzzing insects and chirping birds. The beautiful mountain view and scenery are unforgettable. This route is recommended for bikers who have experience in the intermediate climbing level. Certain parts of the route are uneven with poor road condition. Please remember to reduce biking speed at this part of your trip.

Taomi Police Bureau → Longsheng Police Bureau

The elevation here is approximately 400-600 meters. From Puli’s Longsheng Police Bureau. travel on Highway 65 and go pass Puli Paper and Taomi Eco-Village. Downtown Puli, Chi Nan University and Taomi Village can also be seen from afar. This route has more uphill slopes and ditches, so therefore, we recommend bikers with experience take up this challenge. Please ride carefully.

Longsheng Police Bureau → Sun Moon Lake Huanhu Rd.

From Puli’s Longsheng Police Bureau travel onto County Highway 131 to reach downtown Yuchi. Then from Wenwu Street. connect to Jintian Street to reach Sun Moon Lake. The elevation in this area is approximately 400-800 meters. We recommend that you pack all your supplies before departure. Also, most of this route shares the road with other cars, so please stay on the edge of the road while you’re riding your bike.

Depart from the simple and nostalgic Jiji Railway Station and bike on Jiji Huanzhen Bikeway. Along the way you may want to stop by to visit the following attractions that are features of the city: Minxin Academy, Conservation Education Center and Wuchang Temple.

Jiji Green Tunnel

Jiji Green Tunnel is approximately 4.5 km. The broad road is lined with tall eucalyptus trees on both sides. As you ride in the tree-lined green tunnel, you will encounter the little train running alongside the bikeway. Take a break at the rest pavilion or have a cup of afternoon tea in a café. This trip will allow you to fully enjoy the leisure lifestyle this small town offers.
