Once home to the Taiwan Provincial Government, Zhongxing New Village was known as the most beautiful garden city in Taiwan — a community of over 2,000 government residences nestled among lush trees. Nearly ten thousand civil servants from across the island once lived here, bringing together diverse regional cultures and culinary traditions that shaped the area’s rich human tapestry.
HOMETOWN TASTY has spent nearly a decade visiting over 70 local families to rediscover and document the New Year’s dishes once lovingly prepared by provincial government households. These recipes, carried from hometowns across Taiwan, are now carefully preserved through workshops led by village elders, ensuring that the flavors and stories of traditional home cooking live on.
The restaurant’s mission centers on research, documentation, preservation, and experience — inviting guests to savor the depth of traditional Taiwanese cuisine while learning the legends and heritage behind each dish. Dining here feels like stepping into a time capsule: the original layout and partitions of the government dormitory are kept intact, creating a warm and nostalgic atmosphere.
