Maolan Mountain Tea Research and Extension Station

Introduction

Maolan Mountain is located at the northern edge of Sun Moon Lake and rises to an elevation of 1,020 meters. It is an ideal place for viewing the lake scenery or watching the sunrise.

To find the tea research and extension station, turn off Provincial Highway 21 and follow a road which is lined with tea plants. The beautiful green scenery here will uplift your spirits. On the right side of the entrance are several old Japanese-style houses that used to be dormitories for the Tea Research and Extension Station; these houses have been designated by the county government as a historic site.

They have a very old-style atmosphere. Continue up the mountain and you will soon come to the Yuchi Branch Office of the Tea Research and Extension Station. This is a fine place to take in the complete scenery of Sun Moon Lake. Inside this research and extension station is a three-story wooden building, white on the bottom and black on top, which is an old tea-processing plant dating back to the Japanese period. The building has an old classic elegance. The slope of the valley to the left of the processing plant provides an enchanting view of a mountainside covered with tea plants. On a clear day, you can also see as far as the streets of Yuchi.

Continue past the old processing plant and you will see a row of sturdy olive trees beside the road. If the season is right, the road will be covered with their dried red leaves. This is a very beautiful and romantic sight. On the top of Maolan Mountain is a weather station; it is one of the four highest weather stations in Taiwan. The other three are on Yushan (or Jade Mountain), Alishan, and at Jhuzihu in Yangmingshan. The weather station is usually open to the public, and you can go in and look around. The place also has fine views of the surrounding mountains.
