 | The Fonghuanggu Bird Park opened to the public in 1982, under the joint operation of the Taiwan Provincial Government, Nantou County Government, and Lugu Township Office. Since 1992, an education hall has been added, and it changed its name to “Taiwan Provincial Fonghuanggu Bird Park”. This bird park occupies an area of over 30 hectares, and breeds about 300 species of birds, including local Taiwan species and exotic foreign species. An estimated several thousand birds reside at the park. Birds of different habitual behavior, from different ecological environments, can all be found here. They include mountain birds, river birds, sea birds, and migratory birds. Some of these bird species prefer the land, and others, for example, stork and crane varieties, prefer water. | All of these birds are concentrated in an area of 650 to 850 meters above sea level. Many kinds of bird-display areas have been designed with matching terrain. The cages are built along the paths, with wire netting to match the mountain terrain, running along the valley, and allowing the birds the freedom to fly. The natural ecological landscape environment has been preserved in the cages. The visitors can freely view the birds and their behavior and movements in a variety of ecological environments. There is also an area of around 5 hectares of undeveloped land. Under the principle of not damaging the natural environment, a bird viewing path, bird observation facilities, and bird attracting facilities all allow one to enjoy the bird behavior in a pristine, untouched environment. The displays of national birds unique to Taiwan include: Swinhoe's pheasant, mikado pheasant, ring-necked pheasant, Formosan blue magpie, crested serpent eagle, white stork, mandarin duck, and white-eared sibia. Foreign species include: ostrich, ornate umbrella bird, bald eagle, large sized bird of paradise, white-headed kite, African marabou, Chilean flamingo, Siberian crane, macaw, black bulbul, and eastern white pelican. In addition to the bird display areas, there is a Dongding Oolong Tea Area, “Ten-Thousand-Year-Path” Stone Carved Monument, Cilin Lake (Kylin Lake), Fonghuang Waterfalls, etc. The bird park's broadening of the highway has allowed it to become a flourishing place. In order to allow the public to expand their knowledge of the bird world, and to establish preservation of the natural ecology and a correct environmental concept, the bird park sponsors various educational activities, for example, research and study on bird species, drawing competitions, etc. It also publishes books, bringing social and educational functions into play. |
